I just gave a kid in Malawi a school desk. You can too! $24 gets a child in a chair, two children more likely. For the cost of a concert ticket, you can put the next Marie Curie's butt in a seat and help her learn.

..
Every day, thousands of children throughout Africa struggle to learn while sitting on the floor or outdoors. Giving them a desk, where they can write and concentrate, is the first step towards an educational system that attracts students and keeps children excited about learning.

Thanks to Lawrence O'Donnell for his very moving story on tv tonight, and for getting this project off the ground.

What happened to Poland?

First, thanks to Leonard Cohen for the great quote. He was in Warsaw in 2008. They love him, loved him long before Americans had any clue. Love him for more than his haunting "Hallelujah." Which is wonderful, by the way. As is Suzanne. So, yay! Leonard. But seriously, wasn't this a blog about Poland? Yes. It was. More or less. But even when it was it sometimes wasn't. There is too much going on. And, besides, Poland is connected to everything else that goes on in the world. So why not, push out the boundaries. (Just don't tell the Russians or the Germans I'm messing with Polish boundaries, for god's sake!) And, what's up with the Poland connection? Why were you writing about Poland in the first place? I'm not Polish. I didn't plan to become hooked on Polish stories, history, character. But these things happen and over the years (30) of back and forth and friendship and fighting and occasional indifference, Poland has made me wiser, kinder, sillier, more clever, more gracious and generous, healthier, tired, impatient, and patient all at the same time. Talk about chaos! And besides, now I go to Poland because nobody there wants to kill me.
